We helped TietoEVRY and later Haltian to develop the technical side of their Empathic Building product line as well as design the overall product concept. Dead Set Bit delivered a turn-key solution which included architecture design, implementation of a scalable IoT-backend using Python as well as multiple React-based progressive web applications. With the help of Dead Set Bit and the Empathic Building solution, Haltian has raised over 40meur from prestigious VC-funds from Finland and abroad. Our tight-knitted co-operation has lasted for over 8 years already and still continues to this day covering a wide array of technical domains.
Haltian is a Finnish IoT-company that specializes in making simple and effective IoT technology to streamline everyday working life. Haltian’s Empathic Building solution is the cornerstone of their SaaS offering, covering different use-cases in office, hospital and warehouse environments, where visualization of IoT data is of paramount interest to the end-users of the building. To date, Haltian has raised over 40 million euros in funding. The Empathic Building solution is trusted by companies globally. Customers include companies such as Uniper (DE), Telefonica (ES), Shimizu Corporation (JP), Telia (SE) & National Health Service (UK).
From visualizing individual buildings to entire surrounding areas, our in-house developed WebGL based DSB Web Application Engine ensures unparalleled 2D & 3D visualization capabilities within the browser environment.
Designing and implementing both backend and frontend architectures from zero to hero while making sure both are kept adaptable enough for the usual pivots of a startup company.
From a REST API capable of handling +300 000 000 requests each month to enabling real-time communications efficiently between the server and clients through web socket and MQTT technology.
Implementing +20 integrations to third party platforms, from Office 365 to real-time location systems (RTLS) and everything in between. Connectivity is key.
Empathic Building makes building data visible for the end-users of the building, helping them more effectively navigate around the taken, which are reserved in the future and where colleagues are workplace. Users can see which rooms and desks are currently at the moment. It achieves this by combining data from different IoT-sensors, cloud services such as Microsoft’s Office365 and dedicated real-time location services (RTLS). Users are able to interact with the building and improve it by leaving service tickets and feedback in specific locations, thereby also making management of the building easier. For facility management the solution enables the ability to generate reports on the usage of floors even down to individual tables, rooms and areas to better improve the working place and different areas of it. Whether an office building, a hospital or a warehouse, the versatile solution is able to cater to many different use-cases and sectors of business.
The futuristic idea of visualizing invisible building data for the actual end-users of the building was not commonplace in 2016. Together with TietoEVRY’s startup incubator, we implemented a fully-functioning MVP in 6 months time, after which the product was officially launched at the international tech and startup event Slush in 2017.
Given the novelty of the concept and absence of any comparable implementations, we had to come up with new and innovative approaches for implementing the required features. This included using our proprietary game engine to render buildings within the end-user's browser environment quickly with extremely low memory overhead and load times. To support our end-goals, we created versatile and extendable formats for storing information about the buildings themselves, down to individual IoT-sensor measurement formats.
Throughout, end-user experience remained the cornerstone of our technical and product design efforts.
Without Dead Set Bit, I could not have realized my – back then – futuristic idea of Empathic Building. From a startup accelerator participant to a multi-million business, Dead Set Bit has been there every step of the way offering excellent technical expertise on various matters. Even when the requirements have been unclear or the ideas high-flying, you’ve managed to deliver exactly what has been wanted. I’ve been in the IT industry for over 30 years and can confidently say that you guys are the best at what you do!
